Will it go round in circles?

Fire and ice

This is the fourth of a series of six abstracts that I shot last week in the German city Bocholt, which we visited on a daytrip. A construction place was fenced off, and the fence was turned into an intriguing combination of graffiti and weather-induced wear.

Shanghai High-rise Buildings Abstract 7

Continuing the series of abstracted Shanghai high-rise buildings. As in most cases, the conversion to black and white helped emphasize the inherent line play. The reflections along the dark diagonal add spice with their interactions.

Watch me bleed

Another abstract that I shot in an abandoned factory complex at the Yangshupu Road, which now houses the Shanghai Factory Outlet fashion shopping mall (see for the first one here). Wear and tear at its best.

Nanjing Usnisa palace 6

When we left the Nanjing Usnisa palace, we had to wait for a bus at a bus stand with an extraordinary roof. Another abstract architecture opportunity spotted and taken.

Arc

I shot this abstract somewhere in Shanghai, most likely in the centre, not far from where we live. I like the interplay of straight lines and curves.

The stars like dust

A very trippy ceiling I came across in one of the rooms of the famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The original is black stars on white, I inverted it in Picasa for additional effect.

Resignation

The last of three of these shots. The yearly manifestation Kerst in Oud Kampen (Christmas in Old Kampen) is a street theater show that often offers special photography opportunities. One of the interesting parts this year was a large paper tree that included over a dozen different sculpted paper faces.

Peeking through

During our short break to Nanjing and other cities, we visited Yangzhou. I've already shared a picture of the beautiful Slender West Lake garden (here); now a shot from the other garden we looked at, Geyuan Garden, famous for its man-built rock formations. Composition-wise this is an interesting example of the rare double frame-in-frame technique.

A flower?

When we were walking through the Frysian town of Drachten earlier this week, I came across a dumpster. Most people would see the dumpster, shrug, and move on. I always check dumpsters for abstract shot opportunities, and I was once more not disappointed. Rust has created beautiful colours and patterns.

During the two-day festivities of Kerst in Oud Kampen, four large containers were stacked, 2x2, near the Buitenkerk. A good opportunity for an abstract shot at the point where they met.

A curious abstract shot with an almost mandatory double diagonal composition. It's very difficult to see what it actually is - a storage cabinet spotted in a Shanghai bookstore at Fuzhou Road.

Yellow fever

Another example of how rust on metal surfaces can create beautiful abstract images - you just need to spot the opportunity. This is in an abandoned factory complex at the Yangshupu Road, which now houses the Shanghai Factory Outlet fashion shopping mall.

Face off

Back to Amsterdam, where we came across this intriguing sculpture at the Rokin. It is by Mark Manders, a Dutch/Belgian sculptor and it was installed in 2017. The bird is a nice touch.

Hieroglyphs

I shot this in the largest Starbucks in the world - a complete building on the main shopping street of Shanghai, Nanjing Road. A complex combination of in-situ roasting and endless rows of seats to enjoy your cuppa joe. I went for this title because the depiction of the Chinese characters on this large machinery reminded me of hieroglyphs.
